Description | Two-panel cartoon. The first panel shows a tiger cub (labeled "The Presidency") saying "1945, Pray for me." The second shows a fully-grown tiger (labeled "Presidential Power") attacking the prone body of Miss Liberty, who is saying "1952, Pray for ME." The idea for the image was borrowed from the Thomas Nast drawing of the Tammany tiger (1871). The cartoonist contrasts the humble Truman who took office as president in 1945, asking his friends to pray for him, with the Truman who wasjudged to have exceeded his constitutional authority when he seized the steel mills in 1952. |
