Spatial Coverage | Pennsylvania--Pittsburgh |
Description | Photograph shows ironworkers or blast furnacemen working at the floor level of a blast furnace. The curved pipe behind the man on the right is a tuyere which injects air into the blast furnace hearth. The cooling water circulates in the steel trough immediately above the left man's arm. A glass peephole built into the tuyere allows the men to see into the blast furnace. Man on right is holding up a cap which secures the glass peephole. Man on the left is rodding the tuyere with a steel bar or rod. (Source: researcher P. Baggley, 2021) |
