| Description | Durga puja of Kolkata as a phenomenon demanded mass appreciation in recent years. The traditional way of representing and looking at the idol worship has gradually transformed into a carnival in the last two decades. From 1985 onwards the picture of Kolkata Durga puja starts to mutate. Earlier, organization of the puja pandal was the sole responsibility to the decorators from Medinipore or Kanthi, and the idol was in the traditional representational format as was mentioned in the Puranas, was done by the veteran artists of Kumartuli. The pandal with the structure of bamboo and coloured clothes is the predominant format. The responsibility of the illumination was on the decorators from Chandan Nagar, Hooghly. However, the year 1985 can be earmarked as the initiation of the transformation that has triggered the complete regeneration of the puja scenario. In arresting the different dimensions of the festival of Durga puja of Kolkata, this project has explored the unexplored traditions, customs and the layer of art-making, which are almost on the verge of extinction. This publication is an outcome of the project under Lalitkala Akademi Ministry of Culture, Government of India Project title: Preservance And Digitising Art Activities During Puja Festival In Kolkata.
