Ganesa Shrine of Brihadiswara Temple

Description	We see a Ganesa temple at the south-west corner. This was built in 1800 CE by Serfoji. In the same direction, we find a shrine with a Ganesa inside the enclosure. This was the original Parivara Devata enshrined by Rajaraja. Rajaraja gave gold for the worship of this Ganesa. These were taken charge of by the merchant community of Tanjavur who arranged daily worship. All these information are found inscribed on the enclosure, pillars and walls of the shrine. There is a pillar carrying an inscription. This is the inscription that declares that this enclosure was built by Rajaraja’s Commander-in-Chief Krsnan Raman, who was incidentally a Brahmina. Brahminas also served as commanders of the army under the Colas. There is ather inscription. It says that Rajaraja’s queen consecrated a copper image ofsiva for which a complete description is given in detail. It also records the jewels she presented and the persons who should look after the conduct of worship daily. There are 85 Utsava murtis (Cola Bronze images) consecrated by various people which are recorded in inscriptions all over this temple. Here is ather record which says that this temple was administered by Tennavan Muvendavelan, who consecrated the images of Tevaram Saints.
