Description | This record has two side. First side conains two expositions in the thumri style. A Thumri is a light classical mode evolved at the time of the decline of the Moghul rule. Patrons of music were then deeply steeped in luxury and romance. Their craving for open romance brought forth the style of thumri in which themes of songs were capable of being interpreted by rhythmic movements of the singer's hands, neck, eyes, eyebrows and other subtle expressions. Begum Akhtar renders on this side of the record thumris in Ragas Kafi and Mishra Tilang and gives them a very elaborate and appropriate treatment to bring out their poetic contents in a highly emotional manner. The second side containts three pieces in the dadra style, A dadra is also a minor mode from the countryside of Uttar Pradesh and is immensely popular with the masses. With the increasing interest in music, even the sophisticated listeners from urban areas are enchanted by the arresting style of dadra presentation. The poetry in the dadras usually consists of themes depecting the loneliness of a young maiden, separated from her lover for a considerable time. The poignancy of separation, therefore, dominates the exposition and the fellings of the distressed damsel are protrayed with choicest modulations of note-phrases. All the three dadras are admirably written by the well-known Urdu poet, Shamim Jaipuri. The table, the harmonium and the sarangi accompaniments are provided by Ustad Mohammed Ahmad, Murli Manohar Swarup and sarangi-nawaz Mohammad Ahmad, respectively : their talents have in fact enriched the performance. To the innumerable admirers of Begum Akhtar's music we take pride in presenting this Long Play record. |
