Description | Chhau originated as a dance form from the mock fights of Oriya ‘Paikasʼ rhythmically accompanied by indigenous musical instruments. The most representative three styles are: Purulia in West Bengal; Seraikela in Jharkhand; and Baripada in Mayurbhanj, Orissa. The notable difference between these is the use of masks. While Seraikela masks are highly sophisticated, Purulia masks are more earthy and theatrical. Mayurbhanj Chhau dancers do not wear masks and depict ‘bhavasʼ throught intricate footwork, whirls and jumps. |
