Description | Pungi (Agore, Mansuri) : Pungi is a more rudimentary version of the murli. The pungi has a limited range of one octave and a high pitch. Most frequently used to accompany singing and dancing, the high pitch ensures that only women can sing along with it. The nomadic Kalbelias and Jogis are the prime users of this instrument. The pungi is strongly associated with snake charming.Satara Dodha or Pawa Dyodha : A variant of the satara, wherein the musical flute is about three-quarters of the length of the drone flute, hence the name ‘dodha,’ which translates into English as ‘one and a half’. The first and fifth note combination (sa, pa) is usually conceived for playing, convenient for the ragas popularly played on the dodha satara, such as Bhairavi, Malkauns , Godvari Bhairvai, and Sindh Bhairavi. |
