Description | Folk Instrument Narh: A long transverse Flute, open-ended on both sides, made out of kangor wood, a bamboo-like plant growing in the Rajasthani desert. Four finger holes in the narh, lying distant from the blowhole, give it a low pitch. The player blows over the edge of one of the side holes, similar to blowing over a bottle. Unlike ordinary Flutes, the player adds a guttural element from the throat in addition to the regular blowing, giving the narh a unique drone. This limits sound production to one breath. It can, however, be played without the throat drone. It is mainly used to construct note patterns, rather than a complete melodic tune. Although rare, narh players can be found among the shepherds of western Rajasthan, like the camel herders around Jaisalmer. It can be played as an independent instrument. While playing, the performer sometimes sings a fairy tale. It sometimes accompanies the Vaith group singers.Folk Instrument Kamaicha: Sometimes an extra set of four sympathetic strings, jhara, runs under the main strings. Unlike other bowed instruments, the arrangement of the strings permits the bow to play upon the sympathetic strings as well as the main ones. The bow helps emphasize the rhythm of the instrument during play. The kamaicha can be found with the Manganiar musician caste in the Jaisalmer, Barmer, and Jalore districts. Khartal: Two pairs of flat wooden strips, one for each hand, clapped together. They rest under the thumb and fore fingers. Skilled players create abundant beat patterns. Either the singer himself or an accompanist plays them. They are used by the Manganiars, professional caste singers of the Barmer and Jaisalmer regions. |
