Description | The puppetry tradition of Rajasthan, socially and culturally, presents a very complex picture. Socially, puppet players from a particular caste are attached through the “jajmani system” to other patron castes. Till half a century back these performing groups were solely dependent on their “jajman” or patron groups for financial support. The patrons had an obligation to fund them or face social ostricization by their own group. This intimate relationship has now changed, giving a different social texture to the survival of the performing arts. Today, new forms have to survive on the quality of performances by catering to the new needs of society in general and by looking for new audiences who will treat them primarily as entertainers. Their social role in the governance of caste discipline, of providing their community with a historical, legendary and mythical genealogy and enabling better social relationships through ceremonies and rituals is getting lost gradually. Culturally, puppeteers not only performed for patrons but also initiated future generations into the skills of performance. Puppet performances are no more one of their chief ways of making a living. They have entered new areas of work such as making puppets for sale, making different types of toys – like birds, camels, horses etc, operating as singing groups that perform folk songs, qawwalis, beat drum at Bhangra dances during ceremonies etc.; performing as Baharupias or impersonators; functioning as antiques dealers; working in hotels in bigger towns; in Rajasthan, they play ceremonial instruments in village and towns.Kathputli play is known by the name Amar Singh Rathore Ka Khel or the play of Amar Singh Rathore. Along with this various characters as Khad-Bad Khan, Shaukeen Khan, Gangaram Mali, Pattebaj, Dulha Dhari, Camel of Dhola Maru, Pilpili Sahib and his Paltan, Bangali Jadugar, Baharupia, Sapera, Kalbelia Marwari Dancer, Anarkali (The dancer), Julahi, Dhobi, Naugaja Peer, Rasdhari. |
