Description | Born in a musically endowed family of Lucknow in 1924, Ilyas Khan was a disciple of Abdul Gani Khan of Kalpi and later of the maestro Yusuf Ali Khan. Based on Dhrupad anga, he used to render his alap in four folds decorated with meend and gamak. He assimilated the techniques of Been, Rabab and Sursingar in his renderings to create an exuberant Purab-ang baj. Through all this, he succeeded in keeping alive the essence of the raga. Ilyas Khan was conferred many honours including Vadyacharya and Sangeet Martand by prestigious institutions. The present CD is the recording of a programme presented in 1956 at the Constitution Club in New Delhi. |
