Description | Instrumental music has always been a major component of the Carnatic system of Indian classical music. Great violinists, flautists, veena and nagaswaram players have been as central as vocalists in the Carnatic tradition. The Violin, in particular, has played a crucial role in refining the contours of Carnatic music right from the beginning, both as an inevitable accompanying instrument and an equally important solinstrument, even though it is an instrumentthat came to India from the West. Lalgudi G. Jayaraman is a violinist who has, by his perfect technique, range and depth of understanding of music, unmatched finesse of expression and supreme tonal quality, been one of the major figures of Carnatic music. |
