Description | The Young Visiters (also known as Mister Salteena's Plan) is a book by English writer Daisy Ashford, first published in 1919. It was written by the author when she was just nine years old and part of the appeal of the book comes from it's juvenile grammar and spelling. The story revolves around 42 year old Alfred Salteena, who hopes to become a 'gentleman'. He is in love with 17 year old Ethel Monticue, but romance is blossoming between Ethel and Alfred's friend, Bernard Clark who is helping Alfred to become more aristocratic. Ashford rediscovered the manuscript when she was an adult, and showed it to her literary friends as a laugh. So delighted were they, that the book got passed around and eventually published, with J. M. Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan, agreeing to write a preface. After its publication, rumours soon started that the book was in fact an elaborate literary hoax, and that it had been written by J. M. Barrie himself. |
