| Description | The Iron Heel, first published in 1908, is set in the future. A manuscript by Avis Everhard, a revolutionist, has been found, dating back to the early part of the twentieth century. The manuscript is analyzed by scholar Anthony Meredith, who lives in 2060. The novel/manuscript follows the rise of the Iron Heel, the Oligarchy which crushed a revolution by the workers. There are footnotes by 'Meredith', who comments upon 'Everhards' words, sometimes quite extensively. One of the first, if not the first Dystopian novels, paving the way for the likes of George Orwell's 1984.
