| Description | The Fat and the Thin is a novel by French author Émile Zola, first published in 1873. It is the third book in the Les Rougon-Macquart series. Set in and around Les Halles, the central market of 19th-century Paris, it tells the story of Florent, an escaped political prisoner mistakenly arrested, who finds refuge with his half-brother and his wife. However, Florent gets involved with a socialist plot against the Empire and is arrested once more. Originally published under the title Le Ventre de Paris (The Belly of Paris), this translation by Henry Vizetelly was first published in 1888.
