| Description | The American Claimant is a book by American writer Mark Twain, first published in 1892. A comedy of mistaken identities, the book tells the story of Howard Tracey, the son and heir to the Earl of Rossmore. After the Earl recieves a letter from America from someone who believes they are the rightful heir, Tracey sets off to investigate. Before he arrives, the claimant dies and his relative Colonel Mulberry Sellers steps in. Believing that the heir to the Earl is now dead, and also that he, the Colonel, has powers to materialise dead people, he gathers the ashes of the deceased claimant, and attempts to do so. When Howard Tracey arrives in America and meets Sellers, the latter believes his powers to reanimate dead people has worked.
