Description | With the introduction of color photography, a new richness and a greater sense of reality were brought to the medium. In Joel Meyerowitz's Provincetown, subtle variations of color and dramatic light express a classic theme: the eternal confrontation between man and nature. The immense expanse of ocean and sky dwarfs the figure at the end of the sandbar, and the sand and lone boat take on the pink tints of the setting sun. Working with a traditional subject, Meyerowitz nonetheless succeeded in extending the possibilities of the photographic medium by allowing color to heighten the emotional and spiritual content of his images.
